Looking ahead…The Annual Band Banquet will be held next Tuesday, May 15th, at 6:00 PM in the CHS Commons (Please see email from Julie Bean). Everyone is invited to join us for an evening of food and fellowship in celebration of the accomplishments of all of our Band Students.

Also, keep your eyes and ears open!!! Information will be coming out soon about meetings, clinics, and sign-ups for the 2018-19 Royal Brigade Marching Band! The Band Camp schedule, along with most of the fall schedule, is already posted on the calendar in CHARMS.

You can earn points (5 per person) for your band account, earn community service hours, and get a free meal. For more information, or to sign up, email Josh LeBlanc at cbpa2ndvp@gmail.com. Our first Music In The Parks event is coming up on Saturday, April 21, 2018. For those of you who do not know, we serve as a host site for Music In the Parks Kings Dominion Music Festivals. Bands, Choirs, and Orchestras from all over the east coast come to CHS to perform at the MITP Festival before heading to Kings Dominion for a day of fun. We have six dates that we are hosting this year – 4/21, 5/5, 5/12, 5/19, 5/26, and 6/2. We typically need help running the site from 7:00 AM – 2:00 PM. Some days are a little longer, some are a little shorter. We need 5-6 parents to help with various things like registration, stage manager/announcer, parking, and concessions. Parents can sign up in CHARMS. We also need about 10 students to help with various things throughout the festival. Student sign-up sheets will be posted on the board in the front of the Band Room. This is a great fundraiser for us (last year, we made close to $10,000) and we need to continue to run a great site so we can continue to host in the future. Thanks!

TWIB Notes – Week of February 26, 2018

This is a very busy time of year for the CHS Band Program. We have a lot going on, so please make note of the events that we have scheduled, upcoming deadlines, etc. Also, don’t forget to check the calendar on the website (www.courtlandbands.com) for the complete schedule and to see where we need volunteers.

Those of you who signed up for the Spring Trip in April, I will be sending out an email later this morning with more information and final payment details. Please be on the lookout for that.

All-County Band students are reminded to turn in their permission slips to me as soon as possible. Remember to check the schedule. This is open to anyone in the CHS Band Program (Marching Band, Winter Drum Line, Winter Guard, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band). You earn point for your band account and The Knights of Pythias make a donation of $500 every month to the CHS Band Program. If everyone signs up to help out 3 or 4 times per year, we can keep this going. If we can’t get people to volunteer then we could lose the $6000 that is donated to our program each year. Contact Josh LeBlanc at cbpa2ndvp@gmail.com for more information.

TWIB Notes – February 19, 2018

Here are this weeks notes and reminders…

Congratulations to the Winter Drum Line on their 1st Place finish in PSA at the Atlantic Indoor Association (AIA) Competition at Forest Park this past Saturday!

Congratulations, also, to the Winter Guard!! They placed 7th out of 13 groups in the SRA2 Division at Forest Park!!

Both groups are off to a fantastic start and are working really hard. If you get a chance to come out and see one of their shows, you will be amazed at what these students are doing! They will be competing through March, leading up to AIA Championships in April. Please, check the calendar for their competition dates and come out to support them!!

Winter Drum Line will have rehearsals this week on M, W, F from 6:00-9:00 PM
Winter Guard will rehearse on T, Th from 6:00-8:00 PM

Tuesday Night, 2/20, the Executive Board will meet at 6:00 PM in the Music Office. Our monthly Band Parent meeting will be held at 7:30 in the Band Room. See you there!!

Wind Ensemble will have rehearsal after school on Wednesday, 2/21, from 2:30-4:00 PM. This is our first after-school rehearsal to get ready for the District Assessment in March. These rehearsals are required and are a part of the performance grade for the 3rd nine weeks. Students who are trying out for Spring Sports need to speak with me prior to Wednesday’s rehearsal.

All-Virginia Band Auditions will be held this Saturday at James Madison University. Good Luck to Riley and Nate as they will be representing Courtland at the auditions and will be competing for a spot in the All-Virginia Band. All-Virginia Band will be held on April 5-7, 2018 in Richmond.

As a reminder, if you can help with the Knights of Pythias Bingo events on Sundays and Mondays, please sign up in CHARMS. If you aren’t sure how to do that, you can contact Josh LeBlanc, cbpa2ndvp@gmail.com, to let him know that you would like to help.

Students are currently working on Class Schedules for next year. It is my hope that every student that is currently enrolled in one of our band classes will continue next year…and throughout their four years at Courtland. Band WILL fit in your schedule…regardless of the type of diploma you are seeking. If you plan properly, there is no reason that you can’t take band for all four years…which is what it takes to build and maintain a solid program. Band should not be a one-year, “check the box”, “got my Fine Arts credit I need to graduate” type of class. You reap the full benefits of being a part of a school music education program over the four years you are in High School. Please, if you are thinking about not taking band next year…if you are having problems with scheduling band…or if you have any questions about the scheduling process and how band can fit,  come and talk to me. Please, remember…I am not trying to make Music Majors out of every single student in the band. That is not realistic. I am, however, trying to help you prepare for your future…in whatever field you choose…and I am a firm believer that being a part of a high school music program is a very important part of that preparation. I hope you will all choose to stay in band and to help me as we welcome a new group of Freshmen into the Courtland Band Family. We need ALL of you!!

Thanks to everyone for all their hard work in providing our students with the best possible experience in a High School Music Program!!

With Pride!

Mr. Leonard
